Intensity at its finest. Matt Foley. Motivational Speaker. 35 years old, divorced and living in a van down by the river! There is a time to be intense and a time to be passive. Unless you are Matt Foley of course….
I am half way through Hal Higdon’s new book “Marathon The Ultimate Training Guide” (order your copy today) and I am always pleasantly surprised after 11 years of running and racing, how much more there is to learn. Just like anything else, if you want to improve your running __________ (stride, speed, distance…etc.), you must run. More. And more. However it is not worth the injury or burnout to continue running at warp speed or increase your distance from a 10 mile run one Saturday to a 20 mile run the following. Hal preaches throughout all his training advice/plans to increase at a steady pace and be intense, but not all the time.
I am currently working on my speed and distance. I am currently averaging a sub 9 mile on average and 160 miles a month. 5 years ago I could only dream of being that fast and running that many miles in a month. Now I want an 8:30 sub and 180 miles a month. Think I am crazy? Yep, me too.
Intensity has its place in your training however be careful to temper your expectations. And remember not to be to hard on yourself if you go out with a sub 8 for 6 miles one day and average 9:30 the following day. Running is a progression sport and patience, in my opinion, is a tough pill to swallow for any athlete. Onward and Upward!
